조덕현은 오래된 흑백사진을 연필과 콘테로 캔버스에 옮기는 ‘사진 드로잉’으로 지나간 시간과 사람들을 현재로 불러온다. 그의 화면에서 사진은 복제의 대상이 아니라 기억을 불러내는 단서다. 전시 제목 ‘므네모시네’는 그리스 신화 속 기억의 여신으로, 망각에 맞서 잊힌 것을 되살리는 힘을 상징한다.

이번 전시는 고미술 수장가 욱천 진호섭(1905~1951)이 남긴 사진첩에서 시작된다. 격동의 시대를 살았던 그의 사진첩에는 거대한 역사보다 한 가족의 평범한 날들이 남아 있다. 작가는 이를 처음 마주한 순간을 “얼어붙었던 기억의 강물이 녹아 그 물을 들이키는 듯했다”고 회고한다. 사진 속 찰나는 작가의 손을 거쳐 긴 시간으로 되살아나고, 한 가족의 사적인 기억은 관람객이 마주하는 현재의 장면이 된다.

이번에 처음 공개되는 대형 신작 〈Palimpsestus〉는 기억에 대한 질문을 한 걸음 더 밀고 나간다. ‘Palimpsestus’는 기존의 글을 지우고 그 위에 다시 글을 쓴 양피지를 뜻한다. 지워진 흔적 위에 새로운 기록이 겹쳐지듯, 기억 역시 과거를 그대로 되돌리는 것이 아니라 사라지고 덧입혀지며 끊임없이 다시 만들어진다. 사진 드로잉이 ‘무엇을 기억하는가’를 향했다면, 〈Palimpsestus〉는 ‘기억은 어떻게 만들어지는가’를 묻는다.

한 개인의 컬렉션을 ‘소유가 아니라 공유’의 대상으로 삼아 온 구하우스미술관은 개관 10주년 특별전으로 이 전시를 선보인다. 한 수장가의 가족이 간직했던 날들은 작가의 손을 거쳐 이제 우리의 기억으로 건너온다.

무엇을 기억할 것인가. 그리고 기억한다는 것은 무엇인가.
