1940년대 후반부터 피카소는 도자기 작업을 시작하였다. 1946년 도자기 전시를 보기 위해 프랑스 남동부의 발로리스(Vallauris)를 방문했다가 Madura공방의 작품을 인상 깊게 보고 공방의 운영자인 수잔나, 조르주라미 부부(Suzanne and Georges Ramié)를 소개받게 되고 협업을 시작하게 된다.


접시 등 단순한 형태의 식기에서 시작하여 점점 항아리나 꽃병 등 더 복잡한 형태의 기물들을 제작했는데, 몸통 부분에 그려진 동물의 얼굴이나 신체 일부분의 형태를 손잡이로 연결하는 방식을 자주 사용하였고, 그리스신화 속 인물, 올빼미나 물고기 같은 동물들의 모습, 투우, 사람의 얼굴 등 장난스러우면서 창의적인 주제들을 도자 작업에 담아냈다.


특히 회화작업에서 느끼는 압박감에서 벗어나 점토 작업을 하며 여름휴가를 보내던 노년에 많은 도자 작품을 만들어 냈기 때문에 피카소의 도자기 작품은 평생 그의 회화와 조각에서 보여주었던 독창적인 형태와 붓의 터치, 여름의 햇살과 지중해의 색을 담은 남부 프랑스 특유의 정서, 가마를 이용하는 새로운 과정을 통해 발생할 수 있는 예상치 못한 결과를 수용하는 작가의 도전정신이 모두 녹아있는 결과물이라고 할 수 있다.
