장성은의 작업의 키워드는 ‘공간’과 ‘몸’이다. <Rue Visconti>는 작가가 프랑스에서 유학하면서 달라진 주변 환경과 공간에서 비롯된 생활방식의 변화로, 사소한 것에서 큰 차이를 느끼게 된 것에 주목함으로써 시작된 작업이다. 우리는 흔히 인체를 측정 기준으로 공간을 인식하거나 의사소통을 한다. ‘크다’, ‘작다’는 말은 ‘자신이 보기에’라는 표현이 생략된 것과 마찬가지이다. 이는 상대적이고 추상적인 것으로, 실제 크기의 정보를 전달한다기보다 익숙해진 공간에 대한 무감각을 보여주는 것이다. 이에 착안한 장성은의 ‘공간측정’ 시리즈는 중 하나인 본 작품은 ‘유럽 한 도시의 좁은 길’이라는 평범한 공간을 사람의 몸을 단위로 ‘측정하기’에 도전한다.

Using space as the subject, Chang’s <Spatial Measure>series demonstrates how people’s thoughts and lifestyles change with a shift in their surrounding spaces. She focuses on the fact that space, a man-made construction, affects people, and that an individual becomes numb to the size or value of the space under his or her subjective observations. In this work, the artist lined up 19 young people side by side, expressing the narrowness of the space. Although the road is large enough for a car to pass through, the narrowness of the street is only a subjective observation

of the individual. The artist explores how people perceive space in daily life through such a retrogressive and cyclical structure that affects the physical body in the end. Chang focuses on how we become unaware of our surrounding space and environment and attempts to measure space through the human body. Recording spaces that only humans and life can measure, Chang experiments with how humans perceive and respond to spaces and matter.
